Intelligent Product Solutions (IPS) and charity: water Awarded International A’Design Recognition for Remote Well Sensor

Innovative design ensures that charity: water’s remote wells continue to bring clean water to communities in need

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. and NEW YORK CITY, May 16, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Intelligent Product Solutions (IPS), a leading global product design and development firm, today announced that the remote well sensor designed for and alongside the team at charity: water received the International A’Design Award.  The remote well sensor enables the monitoring of clean water flow in real time for communities around the globe.  charity: water funds water programs in developing countries and focuses on providing rural communities with access to clean water.  In 12 years, the organization has brought clean water to 8.2 million people in 26 countries.

Recognized in the International A’Design Award, Engineering and Technical Design category, at an annual event held in Como, Italy, the charity: water remote well sensor is featured at https://competition.adesignaward.com/design.php?ID=65655.

The well sensor measures the flow of clean water, and records and reports the amount of water extracted from that well over a period of time. charity: water installs wells in remote locations for communities who lack access to a clean water source. The organization wanted a way to easily check that their projects were continuing to function and to ensure broken wells got fixed a timely fashion. So, with a $5M grant from Google in 2012, charity: water developed their first remote sensor for Afridev wells.  Adding the remote well sensor keeps both the organization and its donors informed in real time about well functionality, advancing transparency and ensuring that clean water continues to flow for communities around the world.

According to the IPS design team, the processor used on the first version of the board for the remote well sensor did not have enough RAM or Flash memory to support water flow measurement accuracy to the desired level. For this latest design project, IPS updated the electronics design to include a new processor with more memory, and re-wrote the water detection algorithm to increase accuracy.  In addition, a GPS sensor was added so the well could be located whenever and wherever necessary.

Another design challenge was that many less-developed parts of the world lack robust cellular technology and with only 2G data service, this limited the amount and type of data that could be downloaded on a regular basis.  The new algorithm for the processor had to use the same or less power than the original design to be effective and withstand the rugged conditions.

“IPS was integral to the process of redesigning our sensor with a new approach that ensures it would function as planned in the rugged environments where they are deployed," said Christoph Gorder, Chief Global Water Officer for charity: water. “The new version of our sensor enables us to continue delivering on our promises of sustainability and transparency for our donors and the communities that we serve.”

According to IPS President Mitch Maiman, “We are honored to work with charity: water to design this important remote well sensor that enables the delivery of clean water to rural communities in remote parts of the world. We pride ourselves in delivering the best in class product design and this award further validates our success and leadership in design.”
