A fundamental rule of being a journalist is that we always come prepared, but never in my 20-odd years of interviewing people have I ever had the subject of the story bring more notes than me. That is, until I met Julianne Moore, who came with photos of the inside of her bathroom cabinet so that she could tell me the exact drugstore products she uses for the good of this article (including a nail hardener that I immediately purchased). Ahead of sitting down with her at a House of Frank & Eileen event—she collaborated with the woman-owned apparel brand on a chic capsule collection—I let her team know that I’d be asking questions about her skin care and wardrobe staples (like I said, journalism), and the Sirens star sure did her homework.
Chatting with the Oscar winner about her go-to wide-leg jeans (the trend-setter has been going barrel since before the denim style gained mass appeal) was like stepping into that scene in every Nancy Meyers movie where the gals gab about divorce over a buttery chard. It was fitting that the first topic of conversation was the coastal-cool button-down she helped design, which would be right at home in that Hamptons living room. She had such an ease that by the time she shared what bra she wears, I half expected her to ask if I wanted to split a lemon pasta and then come over for a taste of the Amazon marmalade she keeps in her pantry. I wouldn’t have hesitated.
Ahead, Julianne Moore talks the tinted lip balm she swipes on daily, her $14 sunscreen, and the clothes that keep her sticky NYC commutes comfortable.
The perfect jeans
“I like an extreme jean. It’s something that’s incredibly wearable, easy to travel in, and easy to live in. If you’re going to invest in something, I want to be able to wear it five times a week. When you live in NYC, you have to be able to move, and I don’t like being uncomfortable. I take the train a lot, so you want to look good, but you want to be able to blend in,” she says. “B-Sides is my favorite brand. I started wearing them a long time ago, and every single woman asks me about my jeans.”
The shoe that never goes out of style
“I love a Birk. Only the Arizona, in black or tan.”
The oil that transformed my nails
“My nails have gotten so torn up from work (from putting fake nails on and taking them off). I’ve also had a terrible reaction to nail polish. This daily keratin treatment is revolutionizing.”
The three pieces of clothing every woman needs in her closet
“A black blazer and a white button-down. A white button-down is all I wear in the summer,” she says, pointing to the breathable Waverly blouse (below) that was inspired by her signature New York style. “And a T-shirt without a collar so you can wear it without a blazer. I can’t fight with two collars. It’s too much for me.”
The sunscreen I always use
At Glamour we can all agree that sunscreen is nonnegotiable and this moisturizing SPF is Moore’s go-to.
My go-to lip balm
“Bobbi Brown lip tint in Blackberry. That’s my favorite!”
The candle I burn at home
Even though she has to be careful because her husband typically “hates candle smells,” she loves this leathery Le Labo scent.
The vitamin C serum I use
Regarded as the secret weapon of skin care, there’s no shortage of vitamin C serums on the market (we’ve tested over 20). This formula gets Moore’s seal of approval.
My favorite bra
Though comfy and underwire might seem like an oxymoron, Moore evidently cracked the code. “Negative Underwear’s demi is the one bra I can wear with everything. It’s an underwire, but it’s not uncomfortable.”
My pantry always has…
“I’m a marmalade freak. My favorite is Tiptree in tawny orange.”
The splurge-worthy bag I carry everywhere
“The Bottega Veneta Dust Bag its my absolute favorite. I can use it as an evening bag or a day bag. It’s expensive, but it’s an investment piece.”
The secret to surviving allergy season
“My eyes get really dry, especially in the city when things are flying around. My eye doctor told me to use these Systane gel drops. You can use them before you go to bed or in the morning.”
The gifts I give my friends
“I’m particularly fond of Babaa’s cotton sweaters. They’re so great, I actually gave them to my girlfriends this year.”
