Three people have been charged with SNAP fraud in unrelated cases in South Carolina over the last several weeks, according to officials.
On Tuesday, the South Carolina Department of Social Services announced the arrest of three people for fraudulently receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
Sumter County
According to SCDSS, from Aug. 13, 2018, and April 30, 2023, Shareita Johnson of Sumter lied to fraudulently obtain food stamps. Johnson submitted 41 fraudulent pay stubs from GPM Investments indicating that she only received between $448 and $575 each pay period.
An investigation revealed that Johnson earned significantly more than she reported from her employer. The underreported income resulted in an overpayment of $48,007 in SNAP benefits.
Johnson was charged with fraudulent acquisition or use of food stamps greater than $10,000. She was booked into the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center.
The case will be prosecuted by the Third Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
Orangeburg County
According to SCDSS, during the periods of Dec. 1, 2020 to March 31, 2023 and July 1, 2023 to Nov. 30, 2023, Jessica Snider of Holly Hill fraudulently received SNAP benefits.
Based on six recertification forms, Snider failed to report her earned income from Stratosphere Quality. This resulted in the overpayment of $25,115 in SNAP benefits.
Snider was charged with fraudulent acquisition or use of food stamps greater than $10,000. She was booked into the Orangeburg County Detention Center.
The case will be prosecuted by the First Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
Berkeley County
According to SCDSS, from Aug. 1, 2018 to July 31, 2022, Tabatha Wyndham of Cross fraudulently received SNAP benefits.
Based on eight recertification forms, Wyndham failed to report her employment and income from Coastal Pediatric Associates. Additionally, she failed to report her husband, Joshua Russell and his income from employment with G4S Secure Solutions and The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company. This resulted in the overpayment of $34,419 in SNAP benefits.
Wyndham was charged with fraudulent acquisition or use of food stamps greater than $10,000. She was booked into the Berkeley County Detention Center.
The case will be prosecuted by the Ninth Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
