Charli XCX showed up to the Met Gala in a bunch of knackered old t-shirts

Designed by Francesco Risso of Marni, the dress was made from 50 old tees from the 70s, 80s, 90s, and beyond

The Met Gala is a time where the most over the top and extravagant looks are not only accepted but encouraged. But oftentimes, some celebs opt for something a lot more simplistic – think Frank Ocean in his Prada two-piece back in 2019 and that time Timothée Chalamet landed on the red carpet serving sexy paramedic. Joining these normcore(ish) ranks this year, was Charli XCX who went for not one, but a big pile of knackered old white t-shirts.

While the simple white tee is a staple in just about everyone's wardrobe, of course Charli didn't turn up in one dug out from the washing bin or the back of her underwear drawer. Instead, she took to the Met's green carpet in a chic amalgamation of old t-shirts stitched together to create a sweeping fishtail gown.

Designed by Francesco Risso of Marni, the British singer’s look ended up being a punky patchwork ensemble that utilised 50 t-shirts from the 1950s and 60s, upcycled to make a sophisticated gown finished off with a cheeky cone bra silhouette.

Made with hand-sewn gemstones, glass beads, and rhinestone embellishments, the look took inspiration from 90s glamour and showed one way to elevate a simple, boring t-shirt. Her look was matched with 90s-inspired makeup by Isamaya Ffrench and hair by Matt Benns.

Of course, this is not the first time Charli has worn custom Marni – last year she was pictured wearing looks designed by Francesco Risso multiple times, including  during her 2023 Coachella performance. Earlier this year, Risso also dressed her in a custom, watercolour mermaid inspired chiffon and silk dress for the BRIT Awards.

Not the only person showing up in a white tee, Doja Cat changed into a floor length Vetements white t-shirt dress that looked as if it had been left on the bathroom floor. After leaving the Mark Hotel alongside Guram Gvasalia pictured in a mini white towel, she changed before stepping onto the carpet in a sheer skin-tight t-shirt dress that looked like it had been doused in water.
