TESCO has suggested a major change to checkouts that's left customers in stitches.

The supermarket has told shoppers that it's holding X Factor style auditions to become the new voice of its self-checkout machines.

The dreaded voice telling you there's an "unexpected item in the bagging area" could soon be yours.

The grocer has posted a video on TikTok asking for customers to tell them why they should be the one talking shoppers through the scanning process.

Tesco said: "Audition to become the new voice of Tesco checkouts by duetting with me.

"So, why do you think you've got what it takes?"

The video has been liked over 168,000 times and thousands have commented on it - with some people in stitches at the concept.

One customer said: "Can someone duet this with a Yorkshire accent."

While another said: "As a Tesco employee I know it would drive my colleagues insane if they had to listen to me every shift."

And one shopper joked: "Mrs Doubtfire voice - 'Help is on the way dear, help is on the way'."

The winner won't get to nag other customers about unexpected items - but they will get to remind them about using their Clubcard.

They will get to record two key phrases that will feature at some stores in November for a limited time - “Don’t forget to scan or tap your Clubcard” and “Clubcard accepted".

Customers applying to be the new voice will also win 10,000 Clubcard points, worth £100.

People can enter the competition by replying to the video using the #TescoVoiceOfCheckout hashtag on TikTok.

It's not the first time Tesco has made a recent change to its checkouts.

From September, tills across its branches started asking customers if they want to round up the total cost of their shop to the nearest pound for charity.

So if your shopping comes to £11.75 for example, the machine will ask you if you want to round it up to £12.

Customers can choose if they want to opt in or not by selecting the appropriate option on the screen.

However, the scheme is closing after this Sunday, October 2.

The retail giant said it will be reducing the number of staffed checkouts across its stores as well.

Manned tills are being replaced at some stores making space for more self-checkouts.
