Two men suspected in a Georgia robbery were captured in Alabama with more than $30,000 in stolen money in their possession, authorities said.

Sylacauga police on Oct. 2 arrested Derrick Pogue, 59, and Edward Cummings, 53, both of Memphis, said Chief Kelley Johnson on Thursday.

About 3:45 p.m. Saturday, Sylacauga patrol officers were dispatched to the area of U.S. 280. Johnson said they were notified by OnStar which was tracking a vehicle at the request of Georgia’s Thomasville Police Department.

The officers were given a vehicle description of a white Buick Encore with a Florida tag traveling westbound on U.S. 280. The vehicle was being tracked because the two occupants had committed a robbery in Thomasville, Georgia, Johnson said.

Sylacauga officers, along with the Talladega County Drug & Violent Crime Task Force, and the Talladega County Sheriff’s Office located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop that shut down westbound traffic on U.S. 280.

Pogue and Cummings were immediately taken into custody.

The vehicle – a rental car out of Tennessee - was impounded by Hindman’s Wrecker Service out of Talladega. Prior to being impounded the contents of the vehicle was inventoried and investigators recovered $31,024, Johnson said.

“This was only a small portion of the money that was reported to the Thomasville Police Department by the victim of the robbery,’’ the chief said.

Johnson did not identify the robbery victim, but according to the Thomasville Police Department, the robbery happened at 12:40 p.m. Saturday at Krishna’s Corner Store.

Police said one of the men was dressed in business attire and the other was dressed in construction clothing and “dirty.” One of the suspects distracted the clerk while the second asked for a bathroom.

During the distraction, the second suspect entered the store officer and stole the cash.

Both men are being held in the Talladega County Jail awaiting extradition to Georgia.
