Fashion: All the festive fun of the fur

Faux fur is bringing style and cosiness to all our day-to-night winter looks. Claire Schofield picks out some of the season's best buys.

Nothing says festive glamour like a faux fur coat, and we all love to wrap ourselves in a little luxury when the chill begins to bite. Yet, we have plenty of places to go and people to party with.

Faux fur jackets and coats have become staple winter wear, now more than ever as we approach Christmas and New Year.

Over your party wear, heading into the city for Christmas and sales shopping, or simply setting off for a country walk, shrug on your faux fur and you will instantly become super-stylish and cosy, whatever the weather throws at you.

However, the best faux fur coats and jackets are selling out fast, so time is of the essence. The race is on to snap up the the most chic on the High Street, and it looks as if faux fur is only going to become more popular next year, too. Gucci has announced a no fur policy for 2018, and these days, faux fur is so well made and luxurious, it feels even better than the real thing (and is much easier on the bank balance, although designer brands are definitely charging designer prices, so don’t expect any bargains).

The faux fur jacket is the festive season’s new style hero, sported in the chicest manner by the likes of fashionistas Alexa Chung and Olivia Palermo.

The longer fur coat is also back in a big way this season and with plenty of ethical alternatives to the look made famous by Cruella de Vil to choose from, you can stay both on-trend and warm this winter.

You can, in fact, channel a Cruella-inspired look with Dorothy Perkins’s striking black and white animal coat, which will look stunning with a pair of black jeans or faux leather, thanks to its short cut finish.

Sainsbury’s offers a similar style with its eye-catching striped white coat. Wear it over a dress, or a skirt and top pairing, and complete the outfit with over-the-knee boots and a stylish clutch for an effortlessly chic look.

Bright and bold colour faux furs are hot on-trend this year, allowing you to bring a bit of jazz to those dreary wintry nights and making statement party looks.

Bonmarche’s chic collared jacket in a deep shade of purple is ideal for an evening out and looks stunning when styled over a long party dress, while an F&F candy-coloured lilac coat will certainly turn heads.

If you are fan of lighter and neutral shades, Wallis and JD Williams have some super-soft, mid-length coats in dusky pink and pale mink, so you can add a more subtle touch of colour to an outfit. Ideal for both evening and day wear, style it over a form-fitting jumper and tailored trousers, teamed with a pair of low-heeled shoes.

Of course, while dazzling colours and prints are the season must-haves, you can always rely on black to look effortlessly classic and stylish, no matter what the time of year, so it’s a great choice if you have investment dressing in mind.

M&Co’s gorgeous velvety soft midi-length coat would bring together any outfit, making it another ideal investment for your winter wardrobe.
