IN a city starved of open spaces, local people as well as tourists will soon be able to spend time by the lake located on the premises of the upcoming textile museum at Kalachowkie. As part of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s plans to pay tribute to the city’s once-thriving mill culture, the civic body is currently in the process of cleaning up the lake and is likely to open it for the people in a month’s time.

Spread over an area of 61,000 square metres in south Mumbai, the design of the museum premises, as prepared by the JJ College of Architecture, proposes to utilise open spaces on the mill site, a heritage precinct. Instead of completing the restoration process, the civic body decided to open up the premises in phases to allow the public to be part of the restoration project.

While the proposal for restoration of the mill structure and setting up shops for well performing students still needs approval from the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC), civic officials said cleaning up of the lake is expected to be completed by the end of next month.

“People can be involved in the revival process to get a feel of the legacy of the city’s textile mills. We will first open up the lake and then gradually work on other aspects of the museum. We are hoping that we will be able to let people visit in a month’s time,” said Ajoy Mehta, the Municipal Commissioner.

The heritage museum premises will also have pathways, an amphitheatre, a light-and-sound show and exhibits related to the history of weaving dating back to the Independence movement. “While the lake is currently being thoroughly cleaned, we will take up styling and flooring work for a sitting area beside the lake. The project has been divided in phases, including restoration of the mill structure, which can be done only after the proposal gets clearance from the MHCC,” said Rajiv Mishra, the Principal of JJ College of Architecture.

Festive offer

Mirroring the concept of Dilli Haat, the textile museum premises will provide a platform to craftsmen producing ethnic items from across the state to sell cloth-based products. As part of interactive activities involving tourists and other visitors, the civic body is planning to involve students of painting and sculpture to take up projects in the open areas and people can participate and paint with
the students.
