Duluth Trading Company to open first N.J. store

Duluth Trading Company - solver of the problem of plumbers crack - is expected to open a store in Ramsey, its first location in New Jersey.

The retailer signed a lease for 13,300-square-feet of space in the Ramsey Square shopping center on Route 17 North, according to Costar Group.

A spokesperson for Duluth Trading declined to comment on the proposed store.

"Our policy is not to disclose the exact location and timing of new store openings until the leasing, permitting and development process has been thoroughly vetted," said spokesperson Melanie Dennig.

When setting up new retail sites the company relies on data showing customer demand and looks for locations that reflect the brand promise of a unique shopping experience, ease of access and ample parking, Dennig said.

The closest current Duluth Trading store for New Jersey shoppers is in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, more than 90 miles from Ramsey.

The Ramsey Planning Board, on April 3, approved a resolution allowing Duluth to re-face the facade and put up a sign at the Ramsey Square location.

Duluth Trading Company is a publicly held retail business that makes clothing and gear for men and women who work in trades, such as construction. It has 37 retail stores.

Its products include moisture wicking, quick-dry clothing and shirts with 3-inch longer rear tails that help prevent plumbers crack, all presented with cheeky marketing.

The business was started by two brother in Duluth who saw guys lugging tools haphazardly between job sites in 5-gallon buckets. They came up with an organizer to fit the bucket and their product list grew from there with the input of construction workers, dock hands, cycle riders and hippies, according to the company's website.

The company opened its first retail store in 2010, after operating since 1993 as a mail order and then in 1996 a web-based business. Duluth told investors in May that it plans to have a total of 100 stores within five years, according to the Minneapolis StarTribune.
