Salvation Army Elgin Corps to provide clothing, toys to families in need this Christmas

The Salvation Army Elgin Corps Community Center hopes to provide a joyous Christmas morning to approximately 900 children in the Elgin area. The annual Angel Tree Program provides toys to families in need and this year two new giving opportunities are being added.

Captain Heather Montenegro, corps officer of The Salvation Army of Elgin and coordinator of the Angel Tree Program, states, "We are thrilled to add The Salvation Army's Adopt-A-Family and Virtual Angel Tree to our programs this year to enhance the giving opportunities of donors and community supporters."

Montenegro believes that providing a gift for a child provides hope to a family in need and sends the message that someone truly cares for them this holiday season.

Ways to help provide for children and families in need include the following.

• Angel Tree: Volunteers can adopt angels, which include wish list items from children who will be served through the Christmas Toy Shop. Volunteers are asked to purchase toys, coat, and clothing items for each angel.

• Adopt-A-Family: The Salvation Army selects a specific family to be adopted by your family or organization. The Salvation Army will collect the family's wish list, and you purchase the gifts and clothing for the family plus food for a holiday meal.

• Virtual Angel Tree: This program is good for companies or families who would like to host a tree but do not have a location for a physical tree. This is also great for large companies with multiple site locations. For this program to be successful, the sponsor must be able to reach their potential donor electronically.

• Christmas Food Box Sponsorship: The Salvation Army distributes 375 food boxes to provide meals on Christmas for families receiving help through the Holiday Assistance Program.

• Volunteer Bellringers Needed: Due to a shorter bellringing season there is a shortfall in red kettle donations. Volunteers are crucial to the success of the Red Kettle Campaign and The Salvation Army Elgin Corps is asking the community for their help. Individuals, businesses, service clubs, churches and families are invited to register for bellringing shifts either online at www.registertoring.com or call (847) 741-2304 for more information.
