Oh Lewis your dress sense is the pits! LIZ JONES says Hamilton may be the greatest driver ever, but his clothes are a total car crash

He’s just become the most successful British racing driver of all time, with his four Formula 1 titles, beating legend Jackie Stewart in the process.

So is it too much to ask that Lewis Hamilton dresses like a champion?

There’s no doubting his supreme talent on the track, but rather than adopting Steve McQueen’s quiet Harris tweed jackets, say, or James Bond’s classy handmade Brioni suits, he’s plumped for very loud, very expensive and very in-yer-face – like the cars.

No wonder, then, that party-loving Hamilton’s go-to brand is Tommy Hilfiger, the American designer who made his fortune repackaging the preppy sportswear of the ruling elite – polo shirts, biker and baseball jackets, tennis and golf-wear.

Co-opted by young urban men and accessorised with giant gold jewellery and low-slung jeans (a style copied from prison, where belts are confiscated), Hilfiger is a label that indicates to all you are both monied and hard.

Lewis, 32, must know that the all-in-one boiler suit he wears for work is the coolest outfit of all time, so I’m wondering if he dresses in this way to repel the women who fall at his padded knees track side. There really can be no other explanation…

Here is just a selection of the gear that he tends to select, which only goes to show that when it comes to fashion, Lewis is yet to find the winning formula.
